Every Book Is An Adventure

I'm stealing this from a very old post of Katja's (which apparently doesn't have pictures anymore), because it looks like fun! I had a similar discussion with a writer friend a while back, and it was absolutely delightful - gives some insight into the characters' personalities, actually.

The Rules

  1. Thank the person who tagged you & link to their blog.
  2. Link back to the creator, Katja @ Little Blossoms for Jesus, & add the tag graphic.
  3. Answer the questions. Feel free to show us ALL the clothing
  4. Tag someone, or several someones—you choose!—and let them know they’re tagged.
  5. Add a clean copy of the questions + the rules at the end of your post for the tagged.

The Tag

1. First off, introduce your character(s) to us! Then tell us how you relate to them.

I'm going to be using four of the characters from Yesterday Was Long Ago - Parker, Rory, Petey, and Johnnie (this is her first mention on the blog)!

Sgt. Steven Parker is the main character in YWLA. He's sort of a mix of his dad (Sgt. Charles Parker from WGOT), Sgt. Saunders from Combat!, and my brother, with his own personality mixed in. Parker is 19, good at working with people, and devoted to his men. He has a firm stance on morals (which inevitably makes some enemies), a logical mind, and he often feels like he has to be there for everyone around him (which gets exhausting).

Rory is basically my orange tabby cat in human form. 😆 He has boundless energy, expends his ammo WAY too fast, and doesn't stop to think about what he's doing. He's not necessarily a bad kid, just impressionable - but he has a soft spot for kids and animals. Given his character type, he DOES tend to hog a lot of the screen time, and we're trying to work on that. 😅

Petey is the smol cinnamon roll of the squad 🫠 I can't say too much about him without giving spoilers, but despite his shyness, he's actually more mature than he looks, and he's got a quiet strength to him. He hates fights and breaks them up whenever he can, but he's smart enough to know when not to interfere.

Johnnie is essentially me 😆 a determined war correspondent who knows how to get what she wants, but is also sensible and can obey orders. She has a big grin, bouncy personality, and an annoyingly cheerful voice. However, because she's only five-foot (*cough cough* me 😭) she has a bit of a scrappy attitude because she feels that people underestimate her. Her slightly unhinged laugh is bound to be the loudest in the room, and she tends to find slightly dark humor hilarious.

2. What’s your character(s)’ main piece of clothing—shirt/skirt combo, suit, dress…? And what’s your go-to main clothing?

Since fatigues are quite boring, lol, we're going to go with what they'd all wear in civilian life (or the "Real World", as the guys "in country" called it).

Parker would definitely be the clean-cut style. No shaggy Beatles haircuts or crazy patterns for him. I could see him wearing a dress shirt and sweater, maybe striped slacks, kinda like the Hardy Boys in some of their books. If he's going more casual, he'd probably look good in a turtleneck or maybe a nice plaid shirt. Maaaaaaybe madras, though he's not a "rich kid", per se. Oh, and a varsity jacket - I could definitely see him wearing that.

Rory comes from a low-income family and a dumpy part of town, plus I can't really see him caring much about what he looks like (his mom cares more than he does). I could definitely see him wearing denim, plaid, and tshirts - kinda like the guys in The Outsiders, but not really the leather-jacket greaser style. Sodapop's outfit here would be pretty accurate to Rory, methinks.

Petey is also from a low-income household (*cough cough* reasons), so he's not gonna be wearing new or expensive clothes. What he has is probably worn out and patched, maybe a few sizes too large or a little too small. I think tshirts and denim for Petey too, likely.

Johnnie, since she has a job as a reporter, would dress professionally when on the job, and probably still look classy when not working. However, she's very practical, and doesn't like anything that gets in her way.

My personal style goes all over the place, lol - from very casual graphic tshirts and hoodies, to combat style (I LOVE olive drab and camouflage!), to greaser-core (yes, I have a leather jacket, and I love it - and I like the plaid-and-tshirt look), to cute vintage-y. It's very eclectic, just like my interests. 😇

3. What about your character(s)’s footwear? And do you care for fancy or simple shoes, yourself?

Hmm, Parker would prefer more dressy shoes, like loafers probably . . .

. . . Rory and Petey would both wear scuffed-up sneakers . . .

. . . and Johnnie likes pumps.

Me, I like going barefoot. 😝 But I love Hey Dudes, sandals, Converse, and combat boots - and, like Johnnie, I ADORE wearing pumps. They're so classy!

4. What jewelry or accessories would your character(s) wear? And what’s your favourites?

Parker always wears his high-school class ring on the little finger of his right hand. He'd probably wear a watch too. I don't know that any of the others would wear any accessories, though Johnnie might wear a gold bracelet or a pearl necklace.

I always wear a dog-tag necklace - everybody knows when I'm coming because it jingles, lol. I also wear a watch, and for church or special occasions I sometimes wear a pearl necklace or bracelet. (Did I mention that I LOVE pearls?! 🥰)

5. What headwear would you character(s) wear? And what do you think of hats?

You know, I can't really see any of them wearing hats, except for perhaps Johnnie. She might wear a pillbox hat or a cloche style now and then. And if she's not wearing a hat, she might go with a headband.

I like hats but generally don't like how they look on me. My favorite in winter is a homemade jeep cap, and in summer I have a cadet cap that I like to wear. (Though if I'm going to a Civil War battlefield, I'll sometimes wear my Confederate kepi . . . it looks good on me and lets my Reb side out. 😜)

6. Any final touches you or your character(s) would wear? What about a bag or purse?

I don't think the guys would wear anything else, but Johnnie would have a practical handbag, large enough to carry a notebook and pen. Oh, and gloves. She'd wear gloves too.

I usually carry a messenger-style bag that looks military-ish. 😝

7. If your character(s) weren’t in their set time period, what style do you think they’d like? What’s your favourite clothing style?

I think Parker and Johnnie would like the 40s, Rory would like present-day, and Petey wouldn't really care. Johnnie would like the Victorian era, except hoop skirts would be a bother, and she wouldn't like that.

My favorite is absolutely the 40s - I LOVE the wartime styles!!! I dress 40s and do my hair in victory rolls whenever I get the chance. 😊 Some of the 60s styles are cute too, but I don't like the fluffy hair and crazy patterns/colors that came in later in the decade.

Now then! I'm going to tag Journey and Miss Special, because I think they'll have fun with this, but you're welcome to snurch if you wish. Here's the list of questions!

  1. Yay, another fun tag!!!! 😁 I always just sort of skate over what my characters are wearing, so this will probably be good for me, 😆 And I’m intrigued by this Johnnie character. . . 👀

    1. Yes, it’ll be good for you. 😆 Hehe, I’m just about to introduce her in the chapter I’m working on, but I’ll dump the details in the chat.

  2. Oh, fun! Thanks for tagging me! I just love all the names you come up with, by the way. I think I might have stolen one on accident when I started working on my latest project 🤭
